on the Pine Ridge Reservation
Staying true to their mission of “promoting the socio-economic sustainability of Oglala Lakota Oyate (people)”, in the Fall of 2008, Lakota Funds started the pursuit of a dream to bring a financial institution, a credit union, to serve the people on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Having assisted over 660 aspiring Indian entrepreneurs in their twenty-some years of existence, Lakota Funds has witnessed first-hand the dire need for financial services for the Oyate.
We recognize the need for savings and checking accounts to help track, manage and save money to reach goals of owning a home or paying for college or buying a car; and for the availability of consumer loans for buying that car. This credit union could provide those services.
We also recognize the need for these services to be readily accessible so plan for the first credit union location to be located in Lakota Trade Center in Kyle, the geographic center of the Pine Ridge Reservation. We also believe that upon obtaining a charter from the National Credit Union Association (NCUA) for this credit union, that the opportunity to serve every member, potentially anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school on the Pine Ridge Reservation will be so great, that another branch will be immediately needed in Pine Ridge.
